Already during his industrial design studies in Genk, Michaël Verheyden (1978) was a very active person. He established the punkrockband Promenade Seven, worked for well known designers as Fabiaan Van Severen and Piet Stockmans, and got to know the Parisian fashion world thanks to a crucial meeting with Raf Simons. In 2001 Verheyden graduated with a surprising clothing concept, ATOMIClothing: two male silhouettes that can be totally changed with a few movements. A year later he launched his own accessory collection, created a transparent information desk for arts centre Z33, made several exhibitions for the fashion museum of Hasselt and managed to combine these projects with a teaching assignment at St-Lukas Brussels.
Next to these activities, Michaël Verheyden likes to reflect on his work through the medium of installation art. So far he has made two works of a triptych, Survival 2002 Camp and Work 2005 cage. The first was a reflection on his way of living, the second on his way of working. The 3rd part will concern the way of presenting and selling his work. Recently his mystic/narcist artwork Blinded by the lights, was installed in the city centre of Hasselt. The fluctuating light brings the work to life and attracts, but can also blind and confront the spectator with him/herself.

For the 20th edition of the Pukkelpop festival (2005) a special belt and bag was created that charmed Roisin Murphy (ex-Moloko) and James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem, DFA), Verheyden created a bag for James Murphy on demand. In 2006 co-operations were set up with Chicks on Speed and Bent van Looy (Das Pop).
The same year he also made the construction Fashion-puppet-show, that can be installed in a clothing shop, but then on a small scale, made out of the cheapest wood possible, in a dirty colour with a glossy shine. Whit this uncanny object Verheyden criticizes the fascinating but superficial world of fashion.
For the 20th anniversary of the prestigious design fair Interieur (2006), Verheyden made a series of 1000 pieces of an androgen lightweight shopper.
In the second part of 2006, Verheyden was the art director of an exhibition on the holy Barbara, combining the work of contemporary artists like Pierre et Gilles, Kutlug Ataman, Els Dietvorst and Stephan Vanfleteren with holy curiosa. Notwithstanding his young age, he was also given the assignment to coordinate Toegepast (applied), the annual scholarship for young designers given by Design Platform Limburg. The 12th edition of Toegepast in 2007 was also under the art direction of Verheyden.
For the Loire wine fashion awards and the Initial Fashion awards Verheyden worked together with his good friend and graphic designer Geoffrey Brusatto. They won the 3rd price in the Loire competition but the first price for the Initial Fashion Awards. Their Rebel without a sauce collection will be put into production in 2008.
In December 2007 the Michael Verheyden company moved to C-Mine, a site for the creative industry in an old mine building in Genk, which houses their offices, workshop and showroom. To invite clients, press and fans of the label Michaël Verheyden Invites was organised May 2008. Mutual respected artists, photographers, designers and musicians were invited to show their work and built a successful party.
January 2009 Verheyden got the Henry van de Velde award for young talent from minister of economy Patricia Ceysens. This award is an important recognition of the Flemish design professionals.
